History
In an era where free speech on college campuses is increasingly restricted and the diversity of thought is stifled, the Austin Union was born out of a passionate desire to revive meaningful discourse. The idea was first sparked by Liv Hagye at University of Austin, who sought to create a space where ideas could clash and converge in the pursuit of truth.
“During my time at the University of Oxford, I was deeply inspired by the vibrant debates and the spirit of intellectual curiosity at the Oxford Union,” says Liv Hagye. “I envisioned a similar sanctuary for students at UATX—where civil discourse and open inquiry are not just encouraged but are the foundation of our community.”
In April of 2024, Dean Morgan Marietta took the initial steps to bring this vision to life by drafting the first constitution of the Austin Union.
The inaugural debate, featuring a distinguished law professor, marked the official launch of the Austin Union. The event was a resounding success, igniting enthusiasm among students and setting a high standard for future engagements. As students began their first semester at UATX in September 2024, they were welcomed into the Union with a solemn induction ceremony. Each new member pledged to uphold the Union’s mission by reciting the motto, “Veritas per disputandum” ("Truth through Debate"), after a brief address to the assembled body.
Recognizing that a traditional debate team was insufficient to meet their broader goals, the student-founders of the Austin Union aimed to cultivate a comprehensive environment for intellectual empowerment. The revised constitution, collaboratively drafted and unanimously approved by the membership, emphasized the transformation of members into eloquent public speakers and critical thinkers through targeted seminars and rigorous debate practice.
By January, the Austin Union had swiftly moved to establish its first series of debates, learning valuable lessons from the mismanagement seen in some Oxbridge unions. This proactive approach ensured that the Union remained agile and responsive to the needs of its members, setting up the Union Council through student elections to foster leadership from within.
Today, the Austin Union stands as a beacon of free thought and civil discourse at the University of Austin, continuously striving to empower its members and enrich the intellectual fabric of the campus community.
