What is the Austin Union?

The Austin Union is a student-led debate society in Austin, Texas. It is operated by students of and supported by the University of Austin and functions as a separate entity.

Can I join the Austin Union?

Only current undergraduates, selected donors, and faculty of the University of Austin are eligible for membership. However, in certain cases, non-members can attend Austin Union events.

How can I attend Austin Union events?

To prevent external disruptions, AU does not publicize event locations in advance. To register and attend, please fill out the form in our registration section. While attendance is primarily open exclusively to UATX students and distinguished invitees, attendance for non-members will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Is the Austin Union partisan?

The Austin Union upholds the paramount value of freedom of speech. Otherwise, it is value-neutral; we welcome speakers and debates of all perspectives.

Will there be debates exclusively for members?

Depending on the type of debate, we reserve the right to close a debate to the public and implement Chatham House rules, especially if there are concerns about safety or other issues if the debate were held publicly.
